Can I use Backup Client to create images of my harddisk?

Backup Client is designed to backup data, not entire images.
However, for client machines such as PCs or Macs, usually a disk failure means new hardware, new OS, etc.
In this case, you would not restore an image but simply buy the new hardware, install the applications you need and then you reytore the data backed up with Backup Client. Even if you have an IT department that will give you a new machine with all the applications installed, often, there is a need to restore some of your data.

Why is it recommended to use JRE 1.6?

Unfortunately, 1.6 is the first release that supports checking the available and usable diskspace on a volume. Backup Client is using these functions to make sure that there are no errors when copying files to the backup destination.
You can use JRE 1.5 but then Backup Client will not use these functions, which means that there will be an error and an incomplete file if there is not enough space.
